B76 THE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
SHAKESPEARE. WILLIAM. THE WORKS. The Globe Edition. Edited by William George Clark and William Aldis Wright.
Macmillan and Co. Limited. London. 1900
Reprint of the 1864 Globe edition. 8vo. (7.6 x 5.3 inches). viii, 1138pp. Fine early twentieth century leather Arts and Crafts style leather binding of full brown morocco. Spine with five raised bands, the compartments ruled and decorated in blind with double floral squares. Each panel with small circular gilt devices as a border. Gilt lettering to one panel and the publication date at the bottom of the spine. Both boards elaborately decorated with blind stamped lattice design featuring the same square floral designs as the spines, within double ruled lines. The corners and cross points of the lattice patterns have blind stamped circles with the lines between each corner decorated with circular gilt decorations and dyed green within the circles. These same designs are used on the inner board turn-ins with a double line of gilt circles with green dye inside, along blind ruled lines and floral squares to the corners. Dark green endpapers. Top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed. ---- A beautiful hand tooled leather binding. The binding is unsigned but is reminiscent of some of the earlier work of Douglas Cockerell and may well be by a student of his.
